· To learn the anatomy of the gastro-intestinal tract; · To learn the physiology of the gastro-intestinal tract especially with regard to nutrition; · To learn the consequences of critical illness on the function of the gastro-intestinal tract; · To learn the causes of disturbances in the balance between intestinal bacteria spp and their effects on the function of the bowel; · To learn the consequences of anatomical pathology on the integrity and function of the intestinal tract; · To appreciate the connections between intestinal inflammation and liver disease; · To learn medical, surgical and nutritional interventions beneficial to the integrity and function of the gut.
